Tadalafil is a PDE5 inhibitor, so blood vessel dilation lasts better and longer. Sexual stimulation is required for effect, so if you are not sexually stimulated, you will not get an erection either.
User manual
The effect of Tadalafil lasts 24-36 hours and can therefore be taken well before sexual activity, or when the possibility of spontaneous sex is desired. The effect starts after 30-60 minutes, reaches a maximum after approximately 4 hours and disappears after 24-36 hours.
