What is Premature Ejaculation?
Premature ejaculation (PE) is defined as:
- Ejaculation occurring within less than a minute of the start of penetration or masturbation; and
- You have no control over the ejaculation.
Premature ejaculation is more common in young men than in older men, but it also occurs regularly in the latter group. According to research, one in three men suffers from premature ejaculation at some point in their lives.
What causes premature ejaculation?
The exact cause of premature ejaculation is unknown, but there are several factors known to play a role.
Known causes include brain chemistry: Men with lower levels of serotonin (the neurotransmitter that contributes to happiness and well-being) in the brain tend to ejaculate more quickly, as well as psychological factors: pressure to perform, stress and fear of failure are common causes, as is erectile dysfunction: if you suffer from erectile problems, premature ejaculation can sometimes be an issue.
