What are finasteride and minoxidil?

Finasteride and minoxidil are both effective treatments that stop hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth. When used in combination, they enhance each other’s effects.

How do finasteride and minoxidil work?

Finasteride and minoxidil are the most popular clinically proven treatments on the market for reducing hair loss and promoting hair growth. In more than 90 per cent of finasteride users, hair growth increases and hair loss decreases.

How does finasteride work?

Finasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone into DHT. DHT is the hormone that causes hair loss in men, as it leads to a shrinkage of the hair follicles, which in turn results in hair loss.

How does minoxidil work?

Minoxidil 5% is a proven effective medicine for treating hair loss and thinning hair. Minoxidil promotes hair growth by improving blood flow to the hair follicles. Initial results are often visible after just 3 to 6 months, although the full effect is achieved after one year of consistent use. Minoxidil 5% can also be used to promote beard growth.=

Instructions for use

Finasteride: Take 1 tablet daily. Set a fixed time to take it so that you establish a routine and don’t miss any days.

Minoxidil: Treatment with 5% minoxidil is very simple and can easily be incorporated into your daily routine:

Preparation: Make sure your scalp is clean and dry before applying minoxidil.
‍Application: Spray approximately 10 sprays evenly onto the areas to be treated.
‍Massage in: Gently massage the product into the skin using your fingertips.
‍Allow to dry: Ideally, allow the product to dry before using any other hair care products.
‍Repeat: Repeat this process twice daily, preferably in the morning and in the evening.

Hair loss and hair regrowth are a gradual process; the first results of your treatment will be visible after 3–6 months.

What is hair loss?

Everyone loses around 100 hairs a day. However, just as many new hairs grow back from the scalp every day. Hair loss is defined as losing more than 120 hairs a day over a prolonged period than the number of new hairs growing back. The hair then becomes thinner.

The most common form of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness). This form is very common – probably more common than you think. 30 per cent of 30-year-old men are affected by it to a greater or lesser extent. By the age of 70, the figure has risen to 70 per cent. Whilst some of us notice this as early as our 20s, others may not experience it until later in life. It is highly likely that you will almost certainly notice some thinning.

What causes hair loss?

By far the most common cause of hair loss is the effect of DHT on the hair follicles. DHT is a testosterone derivative that causes the hair follicles to shrink, which in turn leads to hair loss.

Can this be treated?

Finasteride blocks the production of DHT and thus its effect on the hair follicles. Minoxidil stimulates blood circulation and prolongs the growth phase of a hair follicle. As a result, more hair follicles are active, and you achieve fuller hair with a longer life cycle for each hair follicle.
